Medi Herbs
"MediHerb was born out of my
passion for effective herbal therapy and this remains the driving force behind every
aspect of the company. Independent quality surveys on retail herbal products often
highlight quality issues and other deficiencies. MediHerb products are only sold through
healthcare professionals. By choosing MediHerb your Doctor is providing you with the best
herbal products and this reflects the trust that you place in them to provide you with the
best quality healthcare." -Kerry Bone
MediHerb was founded by Kerry Bone, a first class honors graduate at Melbourne
University who won the
Masson Memorial prize as Australia's top
chemistry student. After 8 years as a research scientist, Kerry then completed with
distinction a 4 year Phytotherapy diploma in the UK. Returning to Australia to practice as
an herbalist, he became frustrated with the poor quality of herbal products and the
resulting effects for his patients. By applying his scientific training he developed a
unique method for extracting herbs termed 1:2 Cold Percolation, ensuring a high quality
product everytime. Word of these high quality herbal products spread and requests were
soon received from other health care professionals around Australia.... and so MediHerb
was born.
MediHerb is the first choice in herbal products for Australian healthcare professionals
and now MediHerb is available in the United States through our partnership with Standard
Process. Both companies share the same philosophy and unwavering commitment to product
quality and to providing education for healthcare professionals.
Total Commitment to Quality
The MediHerb philosophy of total commitment to quality is really a common sense
approach, based on the science of making the best possible herbal products. Working with
herbs to consistently manufacture high quality products is not easy and presents MediHerb
with continual challenges. Plants are naturally complex and the quality of a finished
product can vary enormously, so it is vital that careful analysis of the herb is performed
throughout the entire process from growing in the field, when and how it is harvested, how
it is dried. and then finally perfecting the manufacturing processes.

Quality Control
Our quality control program is a vital stage in producing a product that works for you.
For example: when we receive the herb material, our stringent testing regimes guard
against:
We also perform a battery of tests for pesticides, heavy metals, microbe levels and
radiation levels.
MediHerb's commitment is always to provide the best quality product and so it is not
uncommon for herbs to be rejected.
Unique Processing
Unique Extraction: 1:2 Cold Percolation
The 1:2 Cold Percolation method is unlike other herbal extraction processes and no heat
or concentration step is used which may cause damage to the delicate plant material.
MediHerb prefers to use high quality dried herbs instead of fresh herbs. Fresh herbs have
a high water content, sometimes up to 80% and this makes for a weaker extract.
In addition to the herb, pharmaceutical grade ethanol made by fermentation of
Australian-grown grains and purified water are used in the process. Ethanol is essential
to extract the full phytochemical profile in the plant, this can not be achieved using
water or glycerol alone. The ethanol percentage is defined through science for each herb
to ensure the most effective finished product. 5 mL of herbal extract contains the
equivalent ethanol to 1/6 of a glass of beer or wine and the human liver is readily able
to metabolize this small amount.
Tableting
MediHerb has perfected a unique method for making superior quality herbal tablets using
our 1:2 cold percolation liquid extracts. Many other herbal tablets/capsules are made from
powdered dried herbs or poor quality dried extracts which means they are far less potent.
Low temperature vacuum ovens are used to evaporate the liquid from the herbal extracts
and this is mixed with hypoallergenic excipients to hold the tablet together.
MediHerb tablets must legally disintegrate in less than 30 minutes in warm water, this
means they can be quickly and easily digested.
Our tableting process has been the focus of extensive research to ensure the finished
tablet is the same quality as our liquid extract, which is the same as the herbal material
we first began with - nothing has been lost in the process.
The Science of Botanicals
At MediHerb, we are extremely fortunate to have an outstanding team of people in
Research and Development and Quality control: over 11 scientists including two PhD's,
chemists, two herbalists, a botanist and a biochemist. Together the team has diverse
industry experience in food and herbal products, university research, drug analysis in
hospitals, pharmaceutical, quality assurance, technical writing, and clinical nutrition.
The Research and Development team works closely with the herbalists and naturopaths
within the company on product development to ensure that MediHerb has taken the best of
science, traditional knowledge, and current clinical experience.
Pharmaceutical Standard Manufacturing
In the US, herbal products are considered dietary supplements. This is very different
to Australia, where they are considered medicines and are regulated as such. MediHerb must
comply to the same laws as pharmaceutical companies and our manufacturing plant is to
pharmaceutical standards. Before any herbal product can be launched, extensive
documentation must be supplied to the government on:
